Nakayama whetstone is finest whetstone that is mined in Kyoto for almost 900 years. It had been very important as military affairs in Samurai era, because it is sharpener for weapons, so the mountains had been protected by the Emperor of Japan or Shoguns or Government for hundreds of years. Only Honma family had mined the mountain for a long time. There are those fine grit high quality whetstones in Japan, so Japanese sword and other Japanese cutlery industry has been developed very well compared with the other countries. If there is wonderful high quality cutlery, but there is no fine grit whetstone, the wonderful high quality cutlery cannot be pulled out 100% of the ability. The other hand, if there is no high quality fine grit whetstone, the high quality cutlery is not needed or impossible to have high quality cutlery.
That is why Japanese government had controlled Nakayama whetstone for hundreds years.
Nakayama is highly sought finishing whetstone even in Japan nowadays. The mine was closed about 30 years ago. At the end of closing Nakayama mine, Kato Mine Co. had owned the mountain, and one of general manager, Mr. Hatanaka in Kato Mine Co. started his business with lots of excellent Nakayama Honyama whetstones, and he put his original logo Nkayama Maruka on his whetstones. Those whetstones stamped Nakayama Maruka were very high quality, so it became famous and the price of whetstones deal very high. This whetstone is also from Kato Mine Co. the same time Hatanaka Whetstone Co. took from Kato Mine Co. The owner of this mine company that I got this whetstone told me that it is for sure from Kato Mine Co. about 50 years ago. My grandfather really like to buy and mine whetstones a lot, so the grandfather had kept on buying Nakayama Honyama ore whetstones from Kato Mine Co. The owner of this mine company that I got this whetstone is the third generations of mine and whetstone company in Kyoto. Therefore, this whetstone should be the same whetstone and the same quality of Nakayama Maruka. Nakayama is excellent quality whetstone for razor. Probably #6000 to #10000 grit with the same as artificial whetstone. When we sharpen it with usual amount of force from the top of cutlery, it might be around #6000 to #10000 grit, but we sharpen it with just cutlery weight of force gently, it might be #15000 to #25000 grit. Natural whetstone has wider capacity than artificial whetstone, and actually, we do not know until sharpen blade on the hone for a while. Because artificial whetstone molecules do not break down to smaller sizes, but Natural whetstone molecules are possible to break down to smaller sizes, and those molecules are mixed with sharpened steel molecules, and make Jigane as suitable Jigane color, and Hagane as suitable Hagane color. It is natural mystics.
