It is right hand single bevel edge blade, and it has concave on the both sides. The Jigane (soft iron, the body of the blade and the handle) is made out of Watetsu that is very soft iron from 200 years old hardware, so it is much easier to sharpen than Goku Nantetsu (soft iron). Hagane (steel, the edges of the blade) is made out of Hitachi white I steel which is pure high carbon steel(white I B: C;1.2-1.3, white II B: C; 1.0-1.1).

Watetsu is the iron that is produced with Tamahagane, when Tamahagane (approximately 0.8% to 1.5% carbon content) is made in Tamahagane steel manufacture, however Watetsu is approximately 0.1% of carbon content, so it cannot use it as the steel (Hagane) . However, Watetsu is used as excellent Jigane (softer iron), because it is very soft, and easy to sharpen, and feel excellent in sharpening, and great shock absorber. Japanese carpentry blacksmiths who make high quality chisel or plane use Watetsu for those cutlery of Jigane. Watetsu shows very nice layers of iron, because it has to be hold over so many times to be watetsu products. There are some hard thing of Watetsu : One is what we have to make own Tamahagane, because Watetsu is a part of Tamahagane. Or the other way is to find over 150 years old or older iron products like high quality old hardware made by Tatara steel manufacture (Samurai era in Japan was closed country, so there is only Tamahagane had existed, I meant we have to find old Watetsu for recycle like this razor).

Watetsu is made out of charcoal and iron sand, and it is not homogenized, so It has to turn over so many times the Watetsu to be homogenized as iron product, and plus to remove unwanted part of steel in Watetsu by turning over and pounding and heat up.

It costs much more, and it takes much more times to make watetsu than just using ordinary Nantetsu from steel company.

However, the Jigane by Watetsu looks natural Damascus, because it is turned over so many times. It also shows black lines between layers, because it is made from not homogenized steel.

Even one of greatest carpentry blacksmith, Mr. Chiyozuru, Korehide made Japanese plane Jigane shows some black spots, but it looks more beautiful than without it. As long as it makes no trouble for using it, it should be O.K. The Hagane is Hitachi white I steel that is pure high carbon steel like white II steel, but it has more Carbon in the steel that is able to higher HRC than white II steel. White I steel is pure carbon steel, so it is very hard to success the quenching and tempering processes.

The total length of razor: 6 1/4inch (159mm) The weight of razor is 1.1oz. The width of spine side of the heel: 5mm (3/16 inch) The width of the razor blade: 23mm (15/16 inch)
