About This Item
Takami 72mm Rentetsu / White I Steel blade Kamisori single bevel edge
It is a special order to Takami Tanzo Co. (Chiyozuru style Rentetsu (wrought iron) / White I steel blade Kamisori
Chiyozuru means Chiyozuru Korehide who is the one of the most famous and most admired carpentry cutlery blacksmith in last century.
His cutleries are mostly seen in museums.
He had made mostly carpentry cutleries, but he is also famous about made new style of cutleries in different fields after researches such as cooking knife, pocket knife, picket, kamisori, microtome blade, etc.
I asked to Mr. Amano (Takami Tanzo co.) several years ago to make one kamisori like he made.
It has been over years, and finally, he made one like this for me.
It is kind of large size kamisori, but it is extremely brilliant look.
It is single bevel edge blade, and it has concave on the both sides (Rentetsu on the bevel side).
*Hagane---steel (white I steel) Hitachi white I steel which is pure high carbon steel (white I B: C;1.2-1.3, white II B: C; 1.0-1.1).
*Rentetsu----wrought iron (very low content of Carbon in iron, less than 0.08% of Carbon content)
The Jigane (soft iron, the body of the blade and the handle) is made out of wrought iron that is very soft iron from 19 century ( I guess), so it is much easier to sharpen (smoother) or easier to raise the slurry than Goku Nantetsu (contemporary mass product soft iron).
It is impossible to make 100% pure soft iron in even our contemporary technology.
Especially, mass-production of iron is easier to contaminate some other substance.
Wrought iron has less amount of the other substances than the contemporary iron
Wrought iron is used as excellent Jigane (softer iron), because it is very soft, and easier to sharpen and easier to raise the slurry, and feel excellent during sharpening, and great shock absorber. Japanese carpentry blacksmiths who make high quality chisel or plane use wrought iron for those high-end cutleries of Jigane. Wrought iron shows very nice layers of iron, because it has to be hold over so many times to homogenized product.
There are some things to make hard to obtain wrought iron: One is what I guess no one make it for sale right now. The other way is to find over 100 years old or older high quality iron products like high quality old hardware old rail road or old ship or old train, or old bridge. For example, Eiffel Tower is used wrought iron a lot. I meant we have to find old wrought iron products and recycle like this razor.
To recycle wrought iron has to turn over many times and change the shape, so it comes out Damascus pattern naturally. It costs much more (everything is not useable, and it takes much more times to make wrought iron than just using ordinary Nantetsu from contemporary steel that is made by steel or iron manufacture company.
The hagane is Hitachi white I steel that is pure high carbon steel like white II steel, but it has more Carbon content in the steel that is able to higher HRC than white II steel. White I steel is pure carbon steel, so it is not easy to success the quenching and tempering processes (highest carbon content pure carbon steel in Hitachi Steel Co.).
The total length of razor: 7 1/2inch (190mm) The weight of razor is 2.8oz. The width of spine side of the heel: 6.5mm (1/4 inch) The width of the razor blade: 22mm (7/8 inch)
