203mmX55-67mmX33-38mm #6000 to #8000 Grit Yaginoshima mine is located on nearby Aoto mines in Kameoka-city. The mine has been owned by local government time to time for over 400 years. Yaginoshima whetstone is medium high hard stone in Kyoto finishing whetstones. The mine has produced Awasedo, Iromono, and Suita. There are variety of stones and colors and grits.
#6000 to #8000 grit for chisel blade or Japanese plane or high carbon cooking knife kasumi or Damascus pattern
It produces good amount of black slurry, so it might not need to raise slurry with Diamond lapping stone. (Scale; 1 to 10, 1-3 is very soft muddy rough grit whetstone 3-6 is soft medium grit whetstone, 6-8 is hard medium grit whetstone, 8-10 is fine grit whetstone)
Particle Size--------- 9.0
My blue II steel blade knife Jigane became bright silver color, and Hagane became from semi-mirror finish to mirror finish. (Scale; 1 to 10, 1-3 give deep scratch marks to the steel, 3-5 is delete the 1-3 scratches, 5-8 makes the steel cloudy, 8-10 makes the steel semi-mirror finish or mirror finish)
Natural whetstone cannot be compared with artificial whetstone hardness and particle size. Probably #6000 to #8000 or higher grit.
Natural whetstone has wider capacity than artificial whetstone, and actually, we do not know until sharpened the blade on the hone for a while. Because artificial whetstone molecules do not break down to smaller sizes or corner of the sharpening molecules, but natural whetstone molecules are possible to break down to smaller sizes or the corner of the molecules are getting dull angle, and those molecules are mixed with sharpened steel molecules to make the blade edge finer finish, and they make Jigane as suitable Jigane color, and Hagane as suitable Hagane color. It is natural mystics.
