Yoshimitsu was established as steel wheel blacksmith in Nagasaki since 1852 The way to acquire high quality steel or lower grade steel in Japan until 1868 before Japan opened the country to Euro countries and United State was to get from Tatara which is burn iron sand in charcoal three days and three nights. Japanese blacksmiths used to use forged iron or steel for the places where need to be hard to wear, so good wheels and hardware had been made by forged iron or steel.
There are two things what very famous about Yoshimitsu which works with five Brothers, and the oldest brother who is over 90 Years old president of Yoshimitsu.
The other thing is what Yoshimitsu makes very famous is what they make own Tamahagane from Iron sand and charcoal burning three days and nights. That is why they can use their knives to Tamahagane and Watetsu.
They make own Hagane and Jigane is used over 200 years old hardware, so they have lots of knowledge and experiences from their works from steel production to the end of process cutlery making.
They also make lots of variety of cutleries. They like to make cutlery for the regional people job demand, such as hatchet, Ax, sickle, and etc.

The heel part of the spine width is 2.8mm (1/8 inch) wide.
The blade width from the heel to the spine is 51mm (2inch) wide.
The blade is made of Tamahagane( Hagane) and Watetsu( soft iron) . It is Sanmaiuchi which is sandwitched Tamahagane by Watetsu both sides. They are the same steel and soft iron used for Japanese sword. I was told by Yoshimitsu, the watetsu is used for old ship anchor(hook portion of the anchor which the best portion). If we have good skill of polishing Jigane and Hagane, the blade pattern will show better. Uchigumori should make it better look, and it is great for maintenance of the blade. Japanese sword is used purest high carbon steel Tamahagane, and purest soft iron Watetsu. Japanese sword is famous with very sharp and tough easy to sharpen cutlery, and it is also known art of blade pattern like Hamon, Utsuri, Nie, Jikei, etc. It is very important to show those pattern by Jigane, Watetsu. Therefore, the blade has some minor nicks or scratches. That is imperfection of beauty. Every time, we look at the blade under different light, it is changed the pattern every single time. Yoshimitsu Tamahagane cutlery is very sharp, and supple, and viscosity, and easy to sharpen, because it is pure carbon steel (ideal cutlery is to have very sharp edge, retaining the sharp edge, and easy to sharpen).
